What's so special about Poinsettias?

November 13, 2008

For those of you eager enough to join the rest of us and sell these beautiful poinsettias as your winter fundraiser, I thought I would enlighten you with some interesting facts. You never know when a customer will start drilling you with questions before a final sale.

So here goes:

  1. Poinsettias account for one third of sales of ALL flowering potted plants! Wow is right!
  2. There are roughly 70 million poinsettias sold in North America each year!! Red is the most popular poinsettia color, accounting for roughly three quarters of all sales!!
  3. In the wild, poinsettias can reach heights of up to 12 feet!
  4. Poinsettias are native to southern Mexico.
  5. Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett, the United States ambassador to Mexico, introduced the plant to North America after noticing it on the side of the road while on a trip in Mexico. He brought some cuttings home with him and often used the plants as gifts around Christmas time.
  6. The poinsettia is rumoured to be poisonous, but after repeated tests by the national poison center in Atlanta, Georgia, and the America Medical Association, the plant was cleared of all charges. In fact, the POINSINDEX (the main resource for poison control centers) reports that even if a 50-pound child consumed more than 500 poinsettia bracts, it would not be fatal.
  7. And finally, poinsettias are proven (by yours truly) to cheer up even the grumpiest scrooges. It worked with my dad after I tested out point #6 on my little sister :) just kidding, but they do brighten up your day and make people happy. That's a FACT, so let's spread them around!

Now what are you waiting for, sign up today to sell these great little plants to friends and family so that you can raise funds for your many deserving causes!
